Wiener Demel in New York

Mark Holgate, Vogues senior fashion writer, just shared a recent obsession with us: Demel chocolates. This venerable Austrian Confiserie (founded in 1786) opened its first U.S. outpost at the Plaza Hotel in New York last November and has plans for a new ice cream line this summer. The delicious chocolates, candies, jams (not to mention the traditional Austrian tortes, pastries, strudels, and petits fours) look as exquisite as they taste. Plus, each is quite literally a work of art, housed in beautiful packaging created by various European artists from the turn of the twentieth century. Many of the designs (including the charming chocolate-bar scenes) are by Baron Federice Berzeviczy-Pallavicini, the artist husband of Klara Demel and a pupil of the Wiener Werkstatte.
